Auditions are being held for a reader’s theatre production of Minnesota author Jon Hassler’s “Grand Opening,” scheduled for a June 15 performance at Central Lakes College according to Jon Hassler Festival 2015 co-chair Larry M. Kellerman.
Sally Childs, founder of the Lyric Theatre in Minneapolis and the Jon Hassler Theater in Plainview, will direct this performance. She has adapted several of Hassler’s works.
According to Childs, Hassler’s “Grand Opening” has wonderfully flawed, but believable characters which will come to life through this reader’s theatre production. “Grand Opening” is the semi-autobiographical story of the Foster family’s move to rural Plum, Minnesota. While the optimistic family seeks the time-honored dream (in this case by opening a grocery store), Brenden Foster, a sensitive 12-year-old boy, is exposed to the darker side of life in a small town. A nostalgic look back at rural Minnesota, “Grand Opening” tells a powerful tale of the complexities of human frailty, moral awakening and personal triumph.
Needed for the cast are Brendan, age 12; Dodger, age 14-15; Hank and Catherine, both age 35-40; Grandfather, age 65-70; Stan Kimball and Mrs. Kimball, both age 45-55 (with Stan’s roll double cast as Father O’Day); and Wallace Flint, age 20-25.
Auditions will be held on Monday, June 8, from 5-7 p.m. in the John Chalberg Theatre at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. Persons interested in auditioning are asked to prove a resume of previous theatrical experience.
Rehearsals for the one-time performance are set for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 13, and 7:30-9 p.m., Sunday, June 14; with the performance scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, June 15. Persons interested in auditioning, but who may have questions, can contact Pam Wible, producer, at [email protected].
The “Grand Opening” reader’s theatre production is part of the two-day Jon Hassler Festival 2015 being held at Central Lakes College on June 14-15. A detailed schedule of events and registration information for either on line or by mail is available at hasslerfest.weebly.com.
